An effectively managed library media center results in students and staff being well served. Librarians have to concentrate on a variety of details to accomplish this end. Careful attention must be paid to developing a budget, maximizing use of the automation system, maintaining and promoting an environment conducive to learning, and professionally responding to patron needs and concerns.

I have some info for you to help you with the completion of the BEDS reports.

To find out the number of non-book materials, go to Reports. Click on Collection Statistics Summary. The column all the way to the right has a copy count, and the one on the left shows the type of material based on call # prefix. If you've catalogued your materials to reflect type in the prefix, you've hit a homerun.

Number of databases for elementary schools--29
middle schools--29
Distance learning question--yes
E-mail--yes
Internet content--yes
Videoconferencing--yes
Synchronous, multi-point--no

Number of books as of 10/1--Refer to the total from the collection statistics summary (see above) and subtract non-book items.

All libraries are open and staffed for student use at least during all school hours. Indicate if you're open before and/or after school as well. Elementary and middle school libraries are open to individuals without prior scheduling for fewer than 10 hours a week. Indicate that you collaborate and plan with classroom teachers for instruction. Middle and high school libraries have teachers accompany students to the library for whole-class instruction. And yes, we integrate into core academic areas in all standards listed.
